RedPed for Bosch Smart System (BES3)

The RedPed chip especially for e-bikes with Bosch Smart System / BES3 drives. The tool is compatible with the practical RedPed app, which offers a very wide range of functions. Hardly any other tuning module offers such a wide range of setting and optimization options.

One of the highlights of this RedPed module is the option to set the Max Speed to a desired value so that the motor support can be adapted to personal preferences.

In addition, the RedPed is one of the very few tunings for Bosch Smart System drives where the correct speed remains visible on the e-bike display (albeit via the second digit and the decimal place, see below). Alternatively, the correct speed and the actual distance traveled can also be displayed via the app.

The option to carry out firmware updates on the module is absolutely unusual. This means that this tuning is future-proof and can be continuously optimized. Other tunings generally do not offer this option.

It is also worth mentioning that this RedPed module is already compatible with the very latest Bosch Smart System software updates (Update 11.13.0 / 12.13.0 and LED Remote Update 11.9.3 / 12.10.0). These updates sometimes caused major problems with tunings from other manufacturers, but this is not the case with the RedPed.

Important, please note: The Bosch Smart System is equipped with integrated anti-tuning software. Although the RedPed module is characterised by a very low susceptibility to errors, we would like to urgently recommend the following tips to permanently avoid detection by the anti-tuning software:

1. do not set the maximum supported speed higher than 32-33 km/h.

2. if you ride longer distances with tuning activated, you should slow down every now and then, at least briefly.

If you follow these tips, tuning detection by the anti-tuning software is virtually impossible. However, there can never be a 100% guarantee that the anti-tuning software will not recognise the tuning. There are even cases in which corresponding error messages occur without any tuning at all.

If you wish, you can also set the max speed higher than 33 km/h (up to 45 km/h) via the app, but we strongly advise against this option! If errors occur as a result of the assistance speed being set too high, we cannot offer any support and an exchange is also excluded.

RedPed for Bosch Smart System - Features

-Removal of the 25 km/h speed limit, which enables significantly faster riding with full motor support.

-Set maximum speed: Using the RedPed 2 app, the maximum supported speed can be set to a desired value, between 15 and 33 km/h. This limit was chosen because the Bosch anti-tuning software could kick in at higher speeds.

-There is also the option of increasing the maximum speed up to 45 km/h. However, this option is not recommended, as the tuning could be detected by the Bosch system at speeds above 33 km/h. Upgrading is therefore at your own risk. Attention: The increase to 45 km/h cannot be reversed, not even with a reset.

-Real speed can be read as a decimal number in the E-Bike display: From a speed of approx. 22 km/h, the real speed is shown via the second digit and the decimal place of the display (a displayed speed of 23.2 km/h would therefore correspond to a real speed of 32 km/h etc.). When MAX SPEED is reached, the speed in the e-bike display jumps to 25 km/h. Tip: You can also use the RedPed app to display the correct speed while cycling.

-Tuning activation via app: With this module, tuning can only be switched on via the app.

You can set whether the tuning should only be activated for one ride or whether it should be activated permanently as soon as you switch on the e-bike.

-Display of detailed riding data via the RedPed app (see below).

-Tuning timer: Here you can set the time after which the tuning switches off when you come to a standstill.

-Firmware updates possible, both for Android and iOS.

-"Visibility": Here you can set how long the module should be visible in the app after the e-bike has been switched on. This can prevent unauthorized access.

-"Split speed at": Set how the speed should be split (10-24 km/h). The higher the value is set, the better. However, if it is set too high, the assistance will stop before the maximum speed is reached. In this case, you must reduce the set value again.

-Enter the wheel diameter: Entering the exact wheel diameter ensures an accurate speed display as a decimal number in the e-bike display. The AUTO function can be used for correct setting.

-Show real speed in the display as a decimal number (yes / no).

-Overrun: This value shows the distance the motor is missing due to speed dividing.

Data display via app

The RedPed app not only allows you to define the settings of the RedPed module, you can also display many useful riding parameters on the go. You have the option to customize the display according to your personal preferences - e.g. you can hide values, change the colors of columns and rows, etc. You can also change the font size.

Firmware Updates

The RedPed for Bosch Smart System offers the option of firmware updates, either via the RedPed 2 app for Android or the RedPed app for iOS.

Simply open the menu when the app is connected to the RedPed module and click on “ Firmware update”. The current firmware version is displayed under “RedPed Version”. Under “Image Version” you will see the latest available firmware version. If the “Image Version” is higher, the “Start Update” button will be displayed. Simply click on it to start the update.

Installation & functionality

The RedPed is a tuning module that must be connected between the speed sensor and the motor (to gain access to the required plug connections, the motor protection cover must be removed briefly).

Four cables lead from the module, which must be connected to a) a display socket on the motor, b) the display plug, c) the speed sensor socket on the motor and d) the speed sensor plug. The fifth (short) cable is the reset plug, which does not need to be connected.

The module usually has to be placed directly above the motor in the frame; it is attached using the cable ties supplied. The module can often also be placed directly in the connection area of the motor. However, there may be deviations depending on the model; it is not possible to define a standard installation location.

After installation, the RedPed module measures the actual speed and generates its own speed signal for the engine control unit. In the process, a lower speed is generated so that the 25 km/h speed limit is outwitted. This enables much faster riding with full motor support.

Due to this functional principle, various values, such as the mileage, are calculated incorrectly by the engine control unit - but the correct values can alternatively be read out via the RedPed app.

The RedPed does not require its own battery, as it is powered via a free display socket.

The RedPed module is robust, as the module's electronics are coated with a layer of varnish and protected by a shrink sleeve with internal adhesive.

Communication between RedPed and smartphone takes place via Bluetooth 4.0.

Compatibility

This RedPed module is compatible with e-bikes with the following drive system:

-Bosch Smart System / BES3

-Compatible with all displays.

-Drive Unit firmware up to versions 11.13.0 / 12.13.0 and LED Remote Update up to versions 11.9.3 / 12.10.0.

Important: The functionality of the RedPed module can only be guaranteed up to the firmware version specified above. If the Bosch Smart System motor is updated to a higher firmware version after purchasing the module, the tuning may no longer work. It is also possible that the Bosch anti-tuning software could be activated. Therefore, please do not carry out any updates on the Bosch e-bike (not even with the eBike Flow app, as this may then automatically install new motor software).

Tip: Bosch Smart System e-bikes (BES3) can be easily recognised by the charging cable plug, among other things.

If your Bosch e-bike charging cable has a square plug (as shown above), you have selected the correct tuning module (provided the bike does not have ABS or a rim magnet). If your Bosch e-bike does not have either connector, you either do NOT have a Bosch e-bike or an e-bike with the old Gen1 drive (Classic Line).
