Functions
How extensive is the tuning product? Does it only raise the maximum engine support or can other settings be made, too? What functions does it offer?
Note: Of course, every tuning can increase the maximum motor support, i.e. shift or cancel the maximum speed limit. This is the minimum requirement and the standard for e-bike tuning. While with the Sx2 dongle the tuning can be added via the display, with tuning Modules (such as the RedPed, VOLspeed, SpeedBox,...) sometimes even the separate support modes can be given an individual maximum speed limit, or the limit can be adjusted or removed completely. The JUM-Ped tuning tool works completely different, and it allows many more setting possibilities, e.g. the modification of the throttle function.
Easy installation of the tuning
How easy is the installation of the tuning? Do I need tools or even special tools? How long does the installation take?
Note: With the JUM-Ped you only have to plug the cables at the console into the JUM-Ped, or with the Badass Box you just have to plug the tuning onto the sensor at the rear wheel. With other tuning tools such as Sx2 Dongle, RedPed, VOLspeed, PearTune, SpeedBox and ASA Speed, things are a little more complicated: Here, the engine compartment must be unscrewed and the tuning installed.
Note: With the Sx2 dongle, installation depends on accessibility to the engine. While the installation in a Yamaha engine is comparatively easy and can be done without special tools, the installation in a Bosch Classic engine (Gen1) can only be done with two special tools (Bosch Spider and ISIS crank puller). The newer Bosch Active and Performance motors (Bosch Gen2 and Gen3) require only one special tool (ISIS crank puller).
Invisible after installation
Is the tuning visible after installation?
Note: For some people it is important that the tuning cannot be seen from the outside. Only the Badass Box cannot be hidden. With the Sx2 dongle, it depends on how you install the cable set. With the Sx2 dongle version with active switch, you can install everything completely in the engine compartment and press the light switch for activation, but then the tuning can no longer be removed quickly and easily. The e-bike tuning Modules (chips) are usually not visible from the outside.
Switching on / off while riding
Is it possible to switch the tuning on and off while riding or touring? Do you have to stop for a short time or do you even have to unscrew the engine compartment completely at home?
Note: With the JUM-Ped it is necessary to stop while riding and to connect the JUM-Ped to switch off the tuning. With the Badass Box it is sufficient to remove the box and move the magnet with a short interruption of the ride. This is where the e-bike tuning Modules and the dongle score, as they can be switched off at the touch of a button at the display. With the Sx2 dongle without an active switch, pulling the dongle is also sufficient. If it is well installed, this should be quite easy.
No more tuning module at the bike
Is it possible to bring the e-bike back into conformity with the road traffic regulations while riding or touring?
Note: A difficult question that we cannot answer conclusively. Most Modules (chips) can only be removed completely by opening the motor. With the Badass Box and the JUM-Ped, you definitely need some time to remove them - so get off the bike again and take a short break while riding, but in this case the removal is really complete. This is apparently one of the unrivalled strengths of the Sx2 dongle: the dongle can be removed in seconds and almost unnoticeably without much effort. This means that the tuning product itself is no longer attached to the e-bike. Whether this means that you are not violating the STVO if the cable harness remains on the e-bike is a question that we cannot answer. We therefore recommend that you do not use your bicycle on public roads. This is ultimately the best choice.
Invisible dismantling
When the tuning is removed, does it leave visible traces on the e-bike or on the e-bike motor?
Note: For some users it is important whether or not the tuning leaves external traces on the e-bike after removal. While the Badass Box and the Jum-Ped do not leave any traces, the other tunings do. Most e-bike tuning chips at least have plug-in connections, but with the Sx2 dongle the cable set must still be connected to the motor with insulation displacement connectors (exception: Sx2 dongle with active switch and Sx2 Dongle with Yamaha cable set). With both, however, the engine compartment must be unscrewed; if one does not proceed carefully here, visible traces will remain. That' s certainly not so nice.
Easy dismantling
How easy is the complete dismantling? Do I need tools?
Note: If you want to remove all the tuning permanently, there are some differences in time and effort. The big difference to the previous point is the tuning Modulees, which can be removed relatively invisibly, but which, as can be seen now, require a lot more effort.
Note: With the Sx2 dongle, dismantling also depends on accessibility to the engine. While dismantling from a Yamaha engine is comparatively easy and can be done without special tools, dismantling from a Bosch Classic engine (Gen1) can only be done with two special tools (Bosch Spider and ISIS crank puller).
Correct display Km and Km/h
When tuning is switched on, does the e-bike display show correct values while riding - such as the real speed or kilometres travelled?
Note: From the customer's point of view, it is a very important factor in the purchase decision of a tuning tool whether the values shown, such as kilometres travelled and speed, are correctly reproduced in the display. This is not the case with the Badass Box and the Sx2 dongle, whereas e-bike tuning Modules usually display these values correctly thanks to their microprocessor-controlled electronics. The JUM ped does not have these problems at all, as it does not operate with frequency division.
