About BionX Motors
BionX was a company headquartered in Ontario, Canada, that manufactured high-quality e-bike drive systems for over 10 years. Unfortunately, after the demise of the Canadian parent company, BionX GmbH had to cease operations at the end of 2018.
The BionX e-bike systems consisted of 3 different components, namely motor, battery and control console. BionX drives were used in e-bikes from over 30 well-known brands, including such renowned representatives as Focus, Wheeler, Diamant, Kalkhoff, KTM, Raleigh, Riese & Müller or Univega. BionX first made a name for itself with an effective rear-wheel motor, but since 2012 there has also been a BionX front motor, which was initially used exclusively in Diamant e-bikes. The BionX conversion kits, with which you could upgrade normal bikes to motorised e-bikes, were also well-known.
BionX e-bike motors
BionX motors were high-quality rear hub motors that were particularly popular in sporty models (e.g. e-mountain bikes from KTM, Wheeler, Focus or Steppenwolf). The drives supported the rider proportionally to his or her pedalling power. A total of 4 support levels were available. Advantages of the BionX drive systems were also the uncomplicated operation and the low overall weight. A special feature of the BionX motor was that it had the ability to "recuperate" (braking energy was converted into electricity to extend the range). The "classic" BionX drive was the G1 motor - a rear wheel motor with integrated power measurement (gearless direct drive). The successor model, the "SL motor", was significantly reduced in weight, but otherwise had the same performance data as the G1 drive. With the IGH3 drive, rear wheel drive and hub gears were integrated so that the advantages of both concepts could be combined.
The last development was the BionX front motor, which was used e.g. in Diamant e-bikes. BionX front motors were considered well suited for city and everyday e-bikes, also because of the comfortable back-pedal brake.
The end of BionX
The end of BionX motors was initiated at the beginning of 2018 when the Canadian parent company filed for insolvency. The European offshoot followed at the end of 2018.
Can BionX motors be optimised?
Yes! There are not many tuning solutions, but with the JUM-Ped there is at least one - absolutely recommendable - tuning solution available.
