Bosch E-Bike Motor Compatibility – Find the Right Browser-Based Tuning Solution
Identify your Bosch e-bike system and find the correct browser-based tuning path for your bike. This compatibility overview covers Bosch Gen1–Gen4 (BES1 & BES2) as well as Bosch Smart System (BES3).
Instead of relying only on motor names such as Gen4, Gen5 or Performance CX, the safer approach is to match your bike by system architecture: BES1, BES2 or BES3. For Smart System bikes, additional details such as BDU, rim magnet, ABS and eShift are decisive.
Bosch Motor Compatibility Overview
Browser-based Bosch tuning does not follow a one-size-fits-all rule. The right solution depends on the Bosch system generation and architecture. In general, classic Bosch systems from Gen1 to Gen4 belong to BES1 or BES2, while the Bosch Smart System belongs to BES3.
Bosch Gen1 – Classic Line
Bosch Gen1 systems were used in the early Bosch e-bike generation and are typically associated with BES1 architecture. Compatibility depends strongly on the original display configuration.
For Gen1 bikes, the display type is especially important. Some setups can be supported by the EBT Unlock Key, while others are excluded.
Explore Gen1 CompatibilityBosch Gen2 & Gen3
Bosch Gen2 and Gen3 systems are common on trekking, city and mountain bikes and usually belong to BES2 system logic.
Many of these bikes are suitable for browser-based USB tuning via the EBT Unlock Key, depending on configuration.
Explore EBT Unlock KeyBosch Gen4 and Smart System
Bosch Gen4 bikes must be checked carefully, because not every Gen4 bike belongs to the same Bosch platform.
Some Gen4 bikes are still BES2 and can follow the classic EBT Unlock Key path. Other Gen4 bikes belong to BES3 / Smart System and therefore require the Smart System solution path instead.
Check Gen4 / Smart System LogicSmart System vs. Classic Bosch Systems
The most important distinction is not simply “Gen4” or “Gen5”, but whether your bike is based on BES1/BES2 or BES3.
- BES1 / BES2: classic Bosch systems from Gen1 to Gen4
- BES3: Bosch Smart System
- Classic systems: usually follow the EBT Unlock Key path
- Smart System: follows the EBTsmart Unlock Key path
For Bosch Smart System bikes, compatibility should not be checked only by display or motor name. The correct order is:
- BDU first
- Then rim magnet
- Then ABS / ABS Pro
- Then eShift
- Only after that: display, battery and remote
Especially for BES3 / Bosch Smart System, it is not enough to search only by terms such as “CX” or “Smart System”. For a structured overview, see the Bosch motor compatibility table.
BDU Logic for Bosch Smart System
On Bosch Smart System bikes, the BDU identifier is one of the most important compatibility keys. BDU means Drive Unit.
Typical Smart System BDU families include BDU31, BDU33, BDU37 and BDU38. Short labels are useful for first orientation, but the exact BDU variant is better for final compatibility checks.
If you do not know your exact BDU, check it in the eBike Flow App. For Smart System compatibility, the correct BDU matters more than the simple marketing label of the motor.
Smart System Selection Rule
If your bike is BES3 / Bosch Smart System:
- Check the exact BDU first
- Then check whether the bike has rim magnet or not
- Then check whether ABS / ABS Pro is present
- Then check whether eShift is present
For compatible Smart System bikes, the relevant product is the EBTsmart Unlock Key.
Gen4 BES2 vs. BES3 – Why the Difference Matters
Not all Bosch Gen4 bikes use the same Bosch architecture. This is one of the most common sources of confusion when choosing a tuning solution.
As a practical first check:
- Round charging port usually indicates BES2
- Square charging port usually indicates BES3 / Smart System
If your Gen4 bike is BES2, the classic browser-based EBT Unlock Key path may be relevant. If it is BES3, you need the Smart System solution path instead.

| Bosch System | Typical Architecture | Typical Display Logic | Browser-Based Solution Path | Maximum Unlock / Speed Logic | Important Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Bosch Gen1 with HMI | BES1 | Legacy Gen1 display setup | Not part of the standard EBT path | Not applicable | Display configuration is decisive |
| Bosch Gen1 with Intuvia | BES1 | Classic Intuvia logic | EBT Unlock Key | Vmax unlocked, depending on configuration | Displayed values can remain correct |
| Bosch Gen2 | BES2 | Classic display family | EBT Unlock Key | Vmax unlocked, depending on configuration | Displayed values typically divided while riding |
| Bosch Gen3 | BES2 | Classic display family | EBT Unlock Key | Vmax unlocked, depending on configuration | Displayed values typically divided while riding |
| Bosch Gen4 classic | BES2 | Classic Bosch display logic | EBT Unlock Key | Vmax unlocked, depending on configuration | Must be clearly distinguished from Smart System |
| Bosch Smart System without rim magnet special case | BES3 | Smart System display family | EBTsmart Unlock Key | 32 km/h mode; optional higher unlock depending on configuration | Speed, distance and mileage remain correct in 32 km/h mode |
| Bosch Smart System with rim magnet | BES3 | Smart System display family | EBTsmart Unlock Key; Switch only for specific rim magnet configurations | 32 km/h mode; optional higher unlock depending on configuration | Switch is a special solution, not a general requirement |
| Bosch Smart System with ABS / ABS Pro | BES3 | Smart System display family | EBTsmart Unlock Key | Only up to 32 km/h | Optional 45 km/h function is not available with ABS |

BDU Families and Smart System Priorities
Typical Smart System BDU families currently mentioned include: BDU31, BDU33, BDU37 and BDU38.
| Priority | What to Check | Why It Matters |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Exact BDU | Smart System matching begins with the Drive Unit identifier |
| 2 | Rim magnet yes or no | Determines whether the standard Smart System path is enough or whether a special rim magnet path may apply |
| 3 | ABS / ABS Pro | ABS limits the available unlock logic to 32 km/h |
| 4 | eShift | Relevant for complete Smart System compatibility matching |
| 5 | Display, battery, remote | Checked only after the core Smart System logic is clear |
If you do not know your exact BDU, the recommended way is to check it in the eBike Flow App.
How to Identify Your Bosch System
If you are unsure which Bosch platform your bike uses, start with the following questions:
- Is it a classic Bosch bike from Gen1–Gen4 or a Smart System bike?
- Does the charging port look round or square?
- Which display family is installed?
- If it is Smart System: what is the exact BDU, and are rim magnet, ABS or eShift involved?
The more precisely you identify the Bosch system, the easier it is to choose the correct browser-based tuning path. You can also use the full Bosch Unlock Key overview.
Browser-Based Bosch Tuning – Key Advantages
- No chip installation – no need to open the motor
- No hardware module required for the classic browser-based path
- USB and browser workflow instead of classic hardware modification
- Reversible logic depending on supported system setup
- Separate solutions for classic Bosch systems and Smart System
This makes browser-based Bosch tuning especially relevant for riders who want a clean, modern and system-focused solution. For setup details, use the official MountainTuning instructions.
